    The World Loses Remarkable Innovator and Musician: LES PAUL PASSES AWAY AT 94      (1915-2009)  

August 13, 2009.     Les Paul, acclaimed guitar player, entertainer and inventor, passed away today from complications of severe pneumonia at White Plains Hospital in White Plain, New York, surrounded by family and loved ones. He had been receiving the best available treatment through this final battle and in keeping with his persona, he showed incredible strength, tenacity and courage. Les Paul was 94.  
One of the foremost influences on 20th century sound and responsible for the worldís most famous guitar, the Les Paul model, Les Paulís prestigious career in music and invention spans from the 1930s to the present. Though heís indisputably one of Americaís most popular, influential, and accomplished electric guitarists, Les Paul is best known as an early innovator in the development of the solid body guitar. His groundbreaking design would become the template for Gibsonís best-selling electric, the Les Paul model, introduced in 1952. Today, countless musical legends still consider Paulís iconic guitar unmatched in sound and prowess. Among Paulís most enduring contributions are those in the technological realm, including ingenious developments in multi-track recording, guitar effects, and the mechanics of sound in general...

October 9, 2008.     The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum honored Les Paul as its 13th American Music Master  with a weeklong series of events telling the story of Paul's life and legacy through multimedia, special tributes, and an all-star tribute concert line-up befitting this musical legend.   Events ran from  November 10 - 15, 2008 in Cleveland and included a screening of   Les Paul - Chasing Sound!   with introduction and Q&A by the film's producing team and a panel discussion with the filmmakers titled "Working with Les Paul."        visit Rock Hall site

September 13, 2008.   American Masters, the PBS series in which Les Paul - Chasing Sound! aired,  won an Emmy Award  for Outstanding Nonfiction Series for the 60th Primetime EMMY AWARDS at the 2008 Creative Arts Emmy Awards at the Nokia Theater L.A.      International Documentary Association  (IDA)  AWARDS  

November 15, 2008.     The International Documentary Association (IDA)  nominated  Les Paul - Chasing Sound!  for two prestigious IDA Awards which honor the most distinguished achievements in nonfiction filmmaking.  The film was a nominee for the ABCNews Video Source Award for its creative employment of historical footage, and for the Continuing Series Award as part of the American Masters series on PBS.     view IDA site

    April 17, 2008 Les Paul - Chasing Sound !  is named a "Silver HUGO  Award Winner" by the 44th Chicago International Film Festival.  The film was expressly chosen from a long list of submissions in the category: Documentary - History/Biography and honored in Chicago at the 2008 HUGO Television Awards on Thursday, May 1, 2008.  The Hugo Television Awards honor the best and most innovative in television production from around the world and pay tribute to the individuals and companies that have been industry leaders through the years.  The most influential and creative members of the international television industry are recognized as leaders in their field.    Visit site:  The HUGO Television Awards

    March 17, 2008 Les Paul - Chasing Sound !  is named a "Silver Telly Award Winner" by the 29th annual Telly Awards, it's top honor.  Founded in 1978 the Telly Awards is the premiere award honoring outstanding television programs as well as the finest film and video productions.  A widely known and highly respected national and international competition, the The Telly Awards annually showcases the best work of the most respected advertising agencies, production companies, television stations, and cable operators in the world.  
    ASCAP DEEMS TAYLOR AWARD     "Best Music Documentary on Broadcast Television"  



December 13, 2007.   The makers of  Les Paul - Chasing Sound !  received the 2007 ASCAP Deems Taylor Award in recognition for excellence in presenting music in a television broadcast.  The Awards were established by ASCAP (American Society of Composers, Authors, & Publishers) in memory of former ASCAP president  and composer/critic/commentator Deems Taylor and are presented annually to American authors and journalists whose books, articles, liner notes - and documentary films - on the subject of music are selected for their excellence.  Chasing Sound was honored at the awards ceremony and a special reception on Thursday, December 13th, 2007 at Jazz at Lincoln Center in New York City. May 15, 2008.    Chasing Sound! The Les Paul Story  (the U.K. version) has been acquired by the  British Broadcasting Corporation  and will be aired in the United Kingdom territories on BBC FOUR with a Friday, October 17, 2008 premiere.


May 15, 2008.    British-based  Eagle Rock Entertainment  has acquired home video distribution rights for Chasing Sound! The Les Paul Story  and will be releasing the DVD in the U.K. and Australia under its Eagle Vision label.   Street date is September 23, 2008.


May 15, 2008.  Distribution of Les Paul Chasing Sound!  in Japan is made through arrangement with Pony Canyon.  The film will premiere on the Fuji Television Network and be released on home video in late 2008.

    November 15, 2007.   President and Mrs. Bush today presented Les Paul with the National Medal of the Arts in recognition of his lifetime of indelible contributions to the American artistic landscape.  The National Medal is America's highest honor for achievement in the arts.  Today in a special White House ceremony, the White House Council on the Arts in cooperation with the National Endowment of the Arts cited Les Paul for his innovation as a musician, his pioneering designs of the electric guitar, and his groundbreaking recording techniques that have influenced the development of American jazz, blues, pop music and inspired generations of guitarists.  Of course, visiting the White House is nothing new to Les, who first played it in 1939 for President Roosevelt.

    May 9, 2007.    Les Paul Chasing Sound!  enjoyed a one-night-only  PREMIERE  showing on Wednesday, May 9 2007 at the historic Landmark Downer Theater in downtown Milwaukee, a few miles from Les Paul's hometown.  Hosted by the Milwaukee Athletic Club, the Pabst Brewing Company, and Sprecher Brewing Company, this first showing of the long-awaited PBS documentary was attended by the filmmakers and Les Paul himself.
